Job Description

Staff Specialist Healthcare:  Supports the Perioperative Associate Chief Nursing Officer

Provides highly responsible, complex administrative support for health system senior leadership. 

Coordinates the strategic planning, development, and implementation of new or changed administrative policy and procedures, programs, projects, and activities. Provides staff support to executive groups, including coordination of meetings, forums, agendas, and assistance in preparing and reviewing materials for discussion.

Collaborates with the Senior Nursing Leaders, Clinical Nursing Directors, Supervisors, and other UMH leadership and staff. Employees in this classification typically analyze, compare, and evaluate various courses of action and have the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities. Primary activities and decision-making authority are performed independently affecting business operation to a substantial degree. Under FLSA, incumbents in this position meet the criteria for exempt status. 

Reports directly to the Perioperative Associate Chief Nursing Officer.

  • Provide executive staff assistance to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Represent the Department of Nursing on clinical operations issues within Adult Perioperative Services.
  • Provide professional staff support on all aspects of leadership meetings and forums requiring independent judgment and planning. Attend leadership meetings as directed by the ACNO, summarize proceedings, and efficiently distribute to those in attendance so that actions can be implemented and monitored.
  • Obtain and provide back-up information required to make strategic priorities progress smoothly, including analyzing, summarizing, and/or reviewing data; reporting findings, interpreting results, and/or making recommendations to assist achievement of goals.
  • Coordinate and assist with Adult Perioperative projects, analyze proposals, assist with metric tracking, make recommendations, as appropriate and assigned.
  • Analyze proposals and make recommendations, as appropriate.
  • Coordinate, review, and summarize relevant literature sources and briefing requests, as assigned.
  • Collaborate across departments to evaluate, design, and facilitate implementation of institutional programs.
  • Research and analyze operational issues including workflow and design.
  • Collaborate with nursing colleagues and management from other departments to improve processes and resolve operational issues.
  • Prepare reports, proposals, presentations, A3's, findings, conclusions, recommendations, and correspondence related to various projects for executive management review.
  • Represent the Associate Chief Nursing Officer on committees, project teams, in resolution of patient care problems and in contacts with external agencies and organizations.
  • Participate in the selection, training, and evaluation of nursing management staff. 
  • Prepare administrative and financial reports, including necessary statistical analysis, as assigned. 

  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or related field such as Health Care Administration, Public Health, or Business. Bachelor's Degree in management, health care or a related field.
  • Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years practicing / managing in a hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills, including personnel management and the ability to perform as a role model for Nursing Staff.
  • Demonstrated analytic skills of financial and clinical data.
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a manner that fosters teambuilding and to provide visionary direction for team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with nurses, administrators, physicians, peers, and subordinates.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to the principles of Patient and Family Centered Care with evidence of successful implementation of initiatives positively impacting patient care.
  • Experience with change management process.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse, interdisciplinary teams, and represent the ACNO as required to a wide range of external and internal parties is required.

  • Experience in fundamental aspects of root cause analysis and successful action planning
  • Familiar with Michigan Medicine policies and procedures
  • Familiar with Michigan Medicine nursing specific policies, procedures and the UMPNC contract
  • Experience in a complex bargained for work environment
  • Familiarity with the continuous quality improvement LEAN processes
  • Training and/or experience in process improvement
